Safe and unsafe veg & fruits for Birds

Fresh foods to Offer your Budgie

Budgie-safe Fruits: Apples, bananas, berries (straw-, black-, rasp-), cherries, citrus fruits, figs, grapes, guava, kiwi fruit, mango, melons, pears, stone fruits,
There is some controversy over citrus fruits, some sites put them on the no-no list, while I know from the Aussie breeders forum that many add all and any citrus to their aviaries.

Budgie-safe Vegetables: Asian greens (bok choy, pak choy, kang kung etc), beets, broccoli flowerets and leaves, carrots (including tops), bell peppers, celery, peas (with shells), the spinach family (chard, silverbeet, spinach), sweet corn, cooked sweet potato, sprouts, the squash family, radishes

Budgie-safe Plants: Basil, chickweed, clover, dandelion, sorrel, and in fact most fresh herbs are safe for budgies as well as native grasses, as long as they are not harvested from road-sides. The pollutants from vehicles make these grasses unsafe.

Foods to Avoid: Avocados, asparagus, apple seeds, dairy produce, potatoes, lettuce too often, onion, rhubarb.

Extract from Pittwater Animal Hospital, Sydney: Quote: “Dangerous foods – Avocado, rhubarb, chocolate and caffeine are all poisonous. Cabbage will make your budgie sick. Spinach and parsley bind to calcium, reducing its absorption from the gut;” unquote.

Controversial foods: Eggplant, plums, cabbage, green beans, citrus fruits
